Sylvia,

Lazca´s death is an huge victory for the ongoing war on drugs. Osama Bin Laden was probably not the one in command of al-quaeda by the time he was death, but he was their moral leader just like Lazca was the ultimate zeta leader, His death is a blow that undermines Zeta´s authority everywhere in the country and in central and south america. It mean they are more vulnerable than ever and it is not an isolated event but rather part of a string of detentions that the mexican army has been conducting.

I have no doubts american intelligence has been so much helpful in detaining many drug cartel leaders, I also know that the mexican navy and federal police are developing their own intelligence now after several years of many changes in their structure during Calderon´s administration.

Lazca is a criminal that was not created by Calderon´s war on drugs, but rather by the irresponsible and corrupted police and army forces that were common during the years of Miguel de la Madrid, Salinas de Gortari and Ernesto Zedillo, Lazca developed during the presidency of Salinas de Gortari, it is part of the mess his presidency left to all of us mexicans.

So I celebrate his demise. Thank you for this great article.

I think that Jose Angel kinda hits the nail on the head with his comparison to OBL.

This has GOT to lead to more bloodshed and instability in NE Mexico.

Great article.
Your reference to the Zetas ability to adapt based on the business environment in each location reminds me of Michael Kenney's research on competitive adaptation. If law enforcement can't evolve as quickly as the TCO's we will always be one, two or ten steps behind.
